About this place
Stepping through the doors of Suzuya in Kyoto’s quiet Mibu neighborhood reveals the gentle, settled atmosphere of a traditional kissaten. A morning highlight is the egg sandwich: rather than a thick omelette, it features delicately folded sheets of thin-cooked egg paired with sliced cucumber. The crisp bite of cucumber and the mellow egg settle neatly between slices of tender bread, pairing seamlessly with the robust blended coffee roasted on site.
The breakfast selection is plentiful from the moment doors open at 7:00. Diners can mix and match starting with simple buttered toast, open-faced melted cheese toast, or ham and cheese, complemented by à la carte sides such as fried eggs and omelettes. Those leaning toward sweet morning fare can opt for the well-regarded French toast, cinnamon toast, homestyle pancakes, or piping-hot doughnuts for a comforting start to the day.
Come lunchtime or whenever a more substantial meal is in order, the house-special curry takes center stage. Slowly simmered, the special beef curry carries a rich, nostalgic depth that can be upgraded with an egg or ordered as a larger portion. Fried prawn curry and beef cutlet curry round out the options, each offering a thoroughly satisfying meal when ordered as a set with a mini salad and after-dinner coffee.
Operating Monday through Saturday from 7:00 to 14:00, Suzuya is closed on Sundays and accepts cash only. Lingering with a cold-drip Dutch coffee or a chilled milkshake amid gentle music and warm hospitality provides a soothing break, whether starting a travel day or settling into a quiet morning routine.
